Yet none of this seemed to affect Ford’s popularity. Indeed, after the mayor offered a somewhat feeble apology for his behaviour on radio, one caller rang in comparing him to John F Kennedy while another noted that Winston Churchill had been a “bottle a day man”. Ford, one Canadian commentator noted, seemed to have captured “better than anyone, the deep currents of outsider rage against the city’s institutions”..
When we ask tough questions, we do so to seek answers not confrontations. We are sensitive to differences in attitudes and culture. We minimize undue harm and take special care with those who are vulnerable or suffering. Abramoff’s schemes included lavishing travel on some lawmakers and congressional staffers, and a golfing junket to Scotland figures in the federal probe. Once the Abramoff outrages burst on the nation’s front pages, Hastert and Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R Calif.) called for a ban on private travel and gifts. But Hastert and Dreier could not sell a ban to their GOP colleagues..
I’ve lived in the District now for just about 10 years four years in college (no, those don’t really count) plus six years as a reporter and editor at Washington City Paper, including the last two and a half writing the venerable Loose Lips column on city political shenanigans. That’s been long enough for things to get plenty lively ’round these parts: a council member arrested on a stalking charge, a District agency targeted in a federal corruption probe, a city hall aide handcuffed for low stakes bribery, and one epic embezzlement scandal. But it also has been long enough for me to fall in love with the ebb and flow of everyday politicking here the folkways and feuds, the substance and spin, the process and personalities. You’ll read about all of that here. I’ll try to make note of what they’ve said and what they’ve done, and whether those things match up.
Getting banks to the settlement table through the pursuit of UDAP actions for robo sign abuses could be a primary goal of UDAP actions in the wake of the robo sign scandal. Should lenders and servicers wish to defend those actions on the merits, and risk judicial intervention that might translate into tens of thousands of dollars in penalties and punitive damages in each case, such would be their right. At the same time, a sensible response to such actions by the institutions caught up in the robo sign scandal would be to consider more robust foreclosure mitigation strategies, including meaningful principal write downs.
